About

Paul Jacobus was a gifted musician and performer whose passion for the arts left a lasting impact on those around him. A 1962 graduate of Dover High School, Paul immersed himself in music and drama, earning numerous accolades that showcased his extraordinary talent. He served as Student Director of “A” Choir, performed in the 1960/61 New Jersey All-State Chorus, and held the esteemed position of President of the Bel Canto Singers in 1962. His dedication was further recognized with prestigious awards, including the City Center Trophy for Outstanding Musical Achievement, The Principal’s Award for Music, and multiple honors from the National Thespian Society, culminating in the title of Best Thespian in 1961/62. His final high school performance as His Majesty, the King of Siam in The King and I—followed by a duet with his leading lady at graduation—marked the pinnacle of his artistic journey at Dover.

Determined to continue his love for music, Paul enlisted in the Army, aspiring to join the Special Services unit. While awaiting that assignment, he entertained troops in the front room at Fort Dix, NJ, from September 1963 to February 1964 before being transferred to Germany. Although his dream of serving in the Special Services unit did not materialize, his love for music never wavered. Following his honorable discharge, he remained active in church choirs and cherished every opportunity to sing alongside his siblings and parents.

Tragically, in April 1974, Paul lost his life in a truck accident, leaving behind his wife and four young children. In his memory, his parents, Charles and Marylouise Jacobus, established The Paul Davey Jacobus Memorial Music and Drama Awards in 1976, ensuring that his passion and dedication lived on through future generations.

Though Paul’s life was cut short, his legacy endures. His love for music and drama became the foundation upon which his family has built a tradition of honoring artistic talent. As his children and grandchildren carry forward his name, his influence remains ever-present—a tribute to his personality, talent, and unwavering love for the arts.

There is a saying that captures the essence of his legacy:
“Music has the power to make us smile and bring us to tears; it can carry us back in time and inspire us to dance in the moment. For all our happiest days, there is music.”

Just as music weaves its magic, so too does drama, capturing emotion and storytelling that transcends generations. The Paul Davey Jacobus Memorial Awards are more than just scholarships—they are a bridge connecting the past, the present, and the future, ensuring that Paul’s artistic spirit continues to inspire.
